Why the Engine Series Matters

MTU is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of high-speed diesel engines for marine, power generation, rail and industrial applications. When sourcing spare parts for an MTU engine, the first step is always to identify the correct engine series — every series has its own part numbers, and ordering a wrong part wastes time and money.

MTU Engine Series Overview

The table below summarises each series, where it is used, and the parts most commonly replaced.

SeriesTypical ApplicationsCommon Replacement Parts
MTU 396Marine propulsion, locomotives, gensets, industrialCylinder liners, pistons, rings, bearings, injectors, turbochargers, water pumps
MTU 183Marine propulsion, fire-fighting pumps, marine gensetsRepair kits, injectors, sensors, pistons, liners, turbocharger components
MTU 2000Marine propulsion, gensets, industrial power plantsCylinder components, fuel systems, turbochargers, engine electronics
MTU 4000Marine, gensets, industrial — high reliability, low running costsCylinder components, fuel systems, turbochargers, engine electronics
MTU 538Marine propulsion, power generation, stationary plantsCylinder components, fuel systems, cooling & turbocharger parts
MTU 595Marine and industrial diesel installationsPistons, liners, gaskets, injectors, sensors, turbocharger components

MTU 1163Fast ferries, yachts, naval vessels — high power densityTurbochargers, fuel injection components, cylinder parts, engine electronics

How to Identify Your MTU Engine Series

Check the engine data plate (nameplate) or the serial number stamped on the block. The model designation — for example MTU 12V2000, 16V4000 or 12V1163 — tells you the series and configuration. If you are not sure, send us a photo of the data plate and we will help you confirm the right part.

Tip: a clear photo of the data plate plus the part numbers you need is enough for us to confirm interchange before dispatch.
